Defining Personal Style: Why It's Something You Build, Not Find
It was never about "discovering" your style.
I’ve got to be honest: It took me a while to come with three words to describe my personal style. At the time, I thought I had my personal style down to a T. So why did I need three words to “help” me get dressed?
In reality, my personal style was non-existent. I wore what I wanted, but absolutely fell victim to trends and fast fashion. I look back at outfits up until 2023 and I’m like, “?????” For years, I thought I had to wear what everyone else was wearing. I bought “it” items because I needed to link them on my blog. It turns out, so many of those things never reflected by personal style.
When I started getting older, shopping was becoming boring and even with new things I wasn’t having fun getting dressed. So I decided to start thinking about the concept of personal style a bit differently. And that’s when I came up with my three words.
Classic
Fun
Approachable
It’s so easy to think about the external pieces of style — especially in the age of social media and fast fashion. It seems like everywhere we turn we’re being influenced in some way. Using your three words helps to ground an outfit to think of getting dressed as part of your life. And it helps you think of pieces as a whole to your closet.
We’re often sold the idea that personal style is something you “discover”. I don’t think personal style is something you find, it’s something you have to work on and build. It’s less about the exterior and more about how you feel about getting dressed. I started really loving my outfits when I started loving how I felt in them.
Since you’re here because you’re looking for a closet that feels like you 100% of the time. You want to feel more put together while being confident in who you are. I have some questions that I think will help us get started.
What words would YOU pick to describe your personal style?
What are some emotions you’d like to feel when you’re dressed?
Name 1 or 2 pieces that you consider must haves in your closet.
Remember, personal style is a reflection of, well, YOU. The better you understand yourself (how you shop, what your lifestyle is like, and who truly influences you) the better you’ll be able to build a closet that is 100% you. At the end of the day, the goal should be to feel more like yourself every time you get dressed!!
